Costa Rica is a country in Central America with rugged relief and tropical forests, with coastline for the Caribbean and the Pacific. Its capital, San Jose, is home to cultural institutions, such as the Pre-Colombian Gold Museum, but the country is best known for its beaches, volcanoes and biodiversity. About a quarter of the territory is occupied by protected forest, full of wildlife species, such as spider monkeys and quetzal birds.
