Paramaribo is also home to the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Paul, a tall wooden cathedral consecrated in 1885.

The ruins of the 17th century Fort Cépérou stand out in the landscape of the capital, Cayenne, with its colorful Creole houses and street markets. Shops and cafés surround the main square, Place des Palmistes, lined with palm trees. The Rémire-Montjoly suburb has several beaches on the Atlantic coast.
