For me, the art of making a travel itinerary is divided into two stages. The first consists of basically choosing a destination according to some variables, such as my desire to know the place, budget, time available and if the time of year I want to travel is more suitable for that region. After that comes the second part. In this case, it is the elaboration of the script itself. That's when I start to organize my day to day, find out what to do in each city, where I'm going to stay and how to take care of travel logistics. It doesn't matter if my intention is to travel within Brazil or organize an international travel itinerary, the steps to be followed are basically the same. Bearing in mind, of course, that when I'm going to take care of the documentation part, the attention on a trip abroad must be redoubled.
# Step 1: Find out where to travel
The four questions I always ask myself when choosing a destination, and then start to get the script ready, are: – What kind of place do I want to visit? – Is the time of year that I will travel suitable to visit you? – Is my budget sufficient for this destination? – Do I have enough time to get to know the main attractions of this place? » Find out what kinds of places you want to visit Before you start putting together a travel itinerary, you need to know what your destination will be. If you don't have a place you've always dreamed of visiting, have no idea where to go or are in doubt among many possibilities, here are some tips that can help you choose. Paradise beaches, mountain villages, metropolises, renowned restaurants, museums, historic cities and nightlife. These are just a few criteria you can use to start “filtering” your options. " When to go If you don't have flexibility in your travel dates, this is another factor you should consider when choosing a destination. For example, if you can only travel in December and January and you hate the cold, going to New York is not a good idea. » Find out how much $$$ you can spend on this trip. This is another very important factor in determining your destiny. You can party until the sun rises in Buenos Aires or New York, for example. I'm sure both cities have plenty of great places to do it. However, you will spend a lot more on one than the other. » How much time will you have available for this trip? Your entire itinerary will be assembled based on these days. It is essential that you know this information before starting to organize it. Keep in mind that some cities need more time to see the main attractions than others.
# Step 2: How to assemble the trip?
Destination chosen, now it's time to start putting together your script itself. Determining which places you will visit and how long to stay in each city will be a task for this stage of your planning. So, let's get to the tips on how to do this. » Search, search and search This whole stage of your planning will involve a lot of research. Consult blogs, magazines and travel guides, Facebook groups and chat with people who have already traveled to the place you want to go. All this with the aim of discovering the main tourist attractions and attractions that your destination offers. Make a list of all these places collected. Do not discard any of them at first. At this first moment, you should also start researching an air ticket (if applicable!), and provide all the necessary documents, such as passport, visa, yellow fever vaccination certificate, travel insurance and other possible requirements (if is the case!).
» Choosing the places With this list ready, it's time to start deciding what you're actually going to know. Time to do more research on each of them and discard the ones that don't interest you. From the remaining items, classify them into two groups. Those you MUST know, and others you wouldn't mind leaving for a next travel itinerary. » Planning your days Time to organize your day in the city you are visiting. Based on the number of attractions you chose in the previous item, stipulate an approximate number of how long you will need to know all the places. Most likely you will find that it takes more time than the amount you have. Don't panic. Try to organize them according to the criteria established above (those that you MUST know and those that can be left for another trip). Setting up a spreadsheet in Excel helps a lot when performing this item. You can divide your days by period, thus determining what you will do in the morning, afternoon and night.
" Accommodation With the itinerary ready and knowing exactly which days you will be in each city, it is a good idea to book accommodation. When it comes to a short trip, with a maximum of three destinations, I already have all the reservations ready before leaving home. In the case of a longer trip, usually more than two weeks and I will pass through more than three cities, I book only for my first two stops, and then I book along the way. But ATTENTION: before leaving home I already have a list of possible places to stay. When traveling, I just confirm the dates. AND ATTENTION 2: if your travel itinerary is international, to destinations such as the USA, Europe and some others, know that at the time of immigration they can ask for your proof of accommodation reservations. If you go to a destination where this proof is mandatory, make all your reservations before starting the trip. About the tricks to choosing a good accommodation, the most important, in my opinion, is: location, comfort and price – in that order of importance. Comfort and price may vary, and, after all, these are concepts that change from traveler to traveller. However, one thing you can't give up is that the accommodation is well located. Both to search for hostels, hotels and inns, as well as to make the reservation itself, I use Booking.com
+ Tips for making a travel itinerary ⇒ When putting together a travel itinerary, it is normal to want to visit as many places and cities as possible. However, by doing so, you will often turn your trip into a marathon. Don't be afraid to leave some place you wanted to know for a next opportunity. ⇒ Commuting days between one city and another are practically wasted days. If the trip isn't too long or if your flight has a good schedule, you might even get to know something on those days. But don't count 100% on it. ⇒ Have at least one day free in your travel itinerary. You can use it however you want. Whether it's to discover a place that you only discovered when you were already in town; to compensate for any unforeseen event that may happen or simply to do what you like best.
